LIPA(Lumière International Photography Award)는 갤러리 뤼미에르가 제정한 한국 최초의 격년제 국제 사진상이다. 세계 예술계와 세계 사진계의 발전에 대한 사명감으로 갤러리 뤼미에르는 전세계에서 활동하는 열정과 창의력 넘치는 차세대 작가들 중에서 엄격히 수상작가를 선정하여, 후원 기업과의 co-work을 통해 scholarship & fellowship이 복합된 세계적 수준의 재정적 지원 프로그램을 진행한다. 국제사진상 LIPA의 목적은 수상작가가 세계 예술계에서 성공적으로 진출 및 정착하여 세계 사진계를 주도할 작가로 성장하는 것이다.
전세계적으로 갤러리스트가 주체가 되어 열리는 사진상은 손으로 꼽을 수 있을 만큼 적다. LIPA처럼 갤러리스트의 주도 하에 제정된 사진상으로는 뉴욕 비영리 갤러리인 Soho Photo Gallery의 갤러리스트가 제정한 ‘National Competition’상이 있다. 그러나, 수상작가에게 상금이 수여되지는 않으며, 특별한 재정적 지원을 해주지는 않는 것으로 알려져 있다. 또 워싱턴의 저명한 개인 소유 갤러리인 Fraser Gallery는 갤러리의 주인이자 디렉터의 심사를 거쳐 수상작가를 선정한다. 수상작가들에게는 전시회 개최의 기회가
주어진다. 지금까지 알려진 갤러리스트가 제정한 사진상들 중에서 LIPA만큼 많은 혜택을 주는 상을
찾아보기는 힘들다.
이 상의 제정에서 후원 기업들의 적극적인 메세나 활동은 국제사진상 LIPA가 실질적인 방법으로 작가를 지원하는데 있어 커다란 힘을 실어 주었다. 미술 후원자(patron)의 역사에서, 예술의 발전을 위해 후원을 아끼지 않았던 메디치(Medici) 가문의 활동상은 후원자의 지대한 영향력을 입증하고 있다. 메디치 가문의 적극적인 예술 후원활동은 르네상스 시기 문화예술의 중흥을 일으켰으며, 그 파급효과는 당시의 경제, 사회에까지 이어져 인류의 역사에서 한 페이지를 장식하고 있다.
현대사회에서는 메디치 가문과 같은 대규모의 영향력 있는 후원활동을 세계적인 기업들이 실천하고 있다. 예를 들어, 독일 증권 그룹(Deutsche Borse Group)은 2000년 프랑크푸르트 하우젠에 신사옥을 건축하며 현대 사진 작품을 컬렉션 하기 시작하였다. 독일증권그룹은 매년 국적에 무관하게 생존하는 사진가에게 수여하는 상 ‘Deutsche Borse Photography Prize’를 통해 2005년부터 작가들을 후원하고 있다. HSBC는 세계적인 은행으로서, 1995년에 설립한 ‘Fondation HSBC pour la Photographie’와 Art Sponsorship을
통해 전세계적으로 다양한 후원 프로그램을 진행하고 있다. 세계적 금융회사인 스위스 연방은행 UBS는 ‘UBS Art Collection’을 통해 지난 13년 동안 세계적 Art Fair인 Art Basel을 후원해오고 있다. 유럽 굴지의 금융사인 도이치 은행(Deutsche Bank)도 총 5만 점 이상의 세계에서 가장 큰 기업 컬렉션을 소장 중이며, 신진 작가들의 작품을 지속적으로 사들이는 등 그 규모를 계속 확장하고 있다.
세계를 무대로 활동하는 국제사진상 LIPA의 후원사들은 국제사진상 LIPA(Lumiere International Photography Award)를 통해 세계를 무대로 진행되는 예술지원 프로그램의 일환으로 LIPA를 후원하여 세계 예술계를 이끌어갈 차세대 작가를 후원하고 세계 예술계의 향후 성장과 발전에 크게 이바지하며, 21세기형 사회 환원적인 기업정신을 실천하는 기업으로 그 명성을 빛내게 될 것이다.

Eelco Brand (엘코 블랑, 1969-)
제3회 LIPA의 수상자 엘코 블랑은 하나의 예술 매체에만 머물지 않고 여러 매체 사이의 경계를 넘나드는 혁신적인 작가이다. 최고의 기술력, 시각적 독창성, 과학 기술 등 이 모든 것들을 겸비한 창의적이고 독창적이며 시간이 흐를수록 발전을 하는 세계적으로 주목 받고 있는 예술가이다.
최첨단 컴퓨터 기술을 사용하여 마치 실제로 찍은 사진 또는 직접 그린 회화처럼 보이는 섬세한 효과를 연출하는 대자연의 모방을 꿈꾸는 이미지 기술자인 그는 디지털 프린트와 애니메이션 작품을 통해 가상 현실 세계를 탄생시킨다.
최근 작업으로는 작가가 창조한 가상 세계에서 존재하는 물체들을 현실의 세계로 끌어내는 조형물을 만들어냄으로써 상상과 현실의 선을 넘나드는 실험적인 작품 활동을 한다는 것이 특징이다.

엘코 블랑의 작품 세계는 바로 무한한 힘과 다양성을 지닌 대자연과 인간에 의해 만들어진 최첨단 테크놀로지의 접목으로 이뤄진 시각적인 아름다움이다. 엘코 블랑이 창조한 자연 풍경은 현실에는 존재하지 않는다. 그는 자신이 직접 구상한 자연 풍경을 컴퓨터 프로그램을 활용한 수작업을 통해서 시각적으로 표출한 것이다.
이와 같은 작업 방식을 통해 우리는 인류를 지탱해온 ‘모방’이란 화두에 접근해 본다. 인류는 모방을 바탕으로 형성된 체계 속에서 실존하며, 현존하는 인류의 찬란한 문화는 반복, 복제, 그리고 새로운 것에 대한 적응으로써 이루어진 것이다. 그리고, 인간과 자연은 서로 어우러진 모방의 관계 속에서 존재해왔다.
엘코 블랑의 3D 애니메이션은 무한 반복이 가능한 작품들로 정해진 시작과 끝이 없고, 특정 줄거리도 존재하지 않는다. 그가 창조한 “움직이는 페인팅”들은 2차원 캔버스의 한계를 뛰어넘어서, 움직임과 소리까지도 직접 만들어 표현된 매혹적인 세상으로 우리를 초대한다. 그리고 더 나아가 디지털 프린트와 애니메이션에서 보여지는 물체들이 실제의 조형물로 탄생되는 과정을 연구하고 실현시킴으로써 작가의 상상 속 세상을 현실과 결합 시킨다.
